The Cemetery Cloister

This large cloister was the burial grounds since the founding of the monastery in the 14th century through to the French Revolution. Carthusian order monastic simplicity entailed anonymous burial marked by a simple wooden cross.

Cypress: Cypress trees are omnipresent in cemeteries in Provence; they symbolise immortality. The lean, massive profile of the cypress tree creates a feeling of serenity and strength.

Perovskia, Buddleia, Hortensia and rosebushes were planted among the massive buttresses of the cloister.
